10 Things To Know Before Your Wedding Day…

Post-Wedding Reflection…

The past few months have been a whirlwind of stress, love, laughter, tears, and some of the best times of our life so far; The post-wedding blues have (just about!) passed and wedding planning is a distant memory!

Hindsight is the best teacher, and although our wedding day was amazing, I’ve come away with a few nuggets of advice to pass on…

1. Skip the traditions that don’t really matter to you…

Don’t feel obliged to include anything in your wedding just because it’s tradition, or because your mum/nan/sister did it at their wedding. Whilst we still had speeches, a first dance and cut the cake, we ditched pretty much everything else and I’m so glad we did. No favours, no formal sit down meal, no bouquet toss…and you know what? No one noticed or complained about a single thing!

2. Delegate, delegate, delegate…

Like a lot of couples, we didn’t like the idea of asking for help in the lead up, and even though we managed to get everything finished, I wish we had accepted those offers of help! I can guarantee that most of your friends and family will be more than happy to lend a hand, and will be thrilled to be a part of it.

This is especially true on the day; we had our reception at a village hall where we had to do everything ourselves. Luckily we had a fab bunch of family and friends that jumped in to help with moving tables, tidying up, un-corking wine etc, so it’s a really important to appoint a few people to take care of things.

3. Start the DIY early…

This follows on from the need to delegate; I was quite naive about the time it would take to get things done and subsequently, we still had a glue-gun in hand the week of the wedding. It’s better to be keen and get started a year before so you can be a little-less stressed in those last few days! If you find yourself running out of time then call up your bridesmaids and get them round for a crafting evening.

4. Don’t be afraid to say “no”…

This applies to both vendors and guests. Firstly, there is bound to be a friend or family member that wants to bring their partner that you’ve never met, and it’s okay to say no to them. Your wedding day should be about bringing all of your loved ones together, and if you’re tight on numbers you may have to be quite strict. Weddings aren’t cheap, and if you explain the situation they will (usually) understand!

Secondly, don’t go with the first vendor you speak to out of fear of turning them down. They know you’ll be shopping around so just make sure you find the right team that meet your needs.

5. Splash out on the most important things…

I would highly recommend sitting down with your partner as soon as possible after your engagement and making a list of priorities. This will ensure you spend a bigger chunk of money on the things you care about the most. For us, music and food were our priority so we made sure we spent a bit extra on getting them just right.

6. Eat, even if you’re not hungry…

Food will probably be the last thing on your mind, but try to make sure you eat a decent breakfast, especially if the champagne is in full flow! The same goes for the rest of the day; I was so caught up in everything else that I didn’t even get a chance to eat any of our desserts or wedding cake! Chances are you’ve spent a lot of money on them, so you may as well enjoy it, right?

7. Accept that some things may not go to plan…

Don’t live in fear that something will go wrong but just be prepared to roll with it. Whether the timeline completely goes out the window, the heavens open, or you spill a full glass of malibu and coke down the front of your dress (yes, that was me…), just take it in your stride; you’ll look back and laugh at it one day!

8. Set aside some time to be alone…

Everyone will tell you how quickly their wedding day flies by, and when you’re surrounded by people wanting to talk and congratulate you, you often don’t get to spend much time with your significant other! The best thing we did was take half an hour away from the madness to get some beautiful photos, and just spend some time on our own.

9. Consider a videographer…

Although we have an amazing bunch of photos that we will treasure forever, part of me really regrets not having a videographer there for the day. The whole day was such a whirlwind and I’d love to look back and see those moments that I may have forgotten about, hear my Dad’s speech again and check out some of the hilarious dance moves!

10. Enjoy every minute…

This may sound cliche but it’ll all be over before you know it, so try to treasure every moment. After all those months of planning and stress, take a minute to look around and take it all in; you’re finally married!!
