6 Reasons Why You Should Have an Engagement Shoot…

Last year I had a fantastic engagement shoot with Laura and Michael in and around the streets of Shoreditch. Both bride- and groom-to-be are East Londoners born and bred and wanted to keep it local for their shoot. And so we set off for a wander through the streets of uber-cool East London to make some photographs together.

Some people are a little unsure about a pre-wedding shoot, but I really believe it’s something every couple should consider, for several reasons:

1. It’s a great way for us to get to know each other…

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life; you don’t want to spend the majority of it being followed around and photographed by a stranger. It’s important for me to get to know all my couples properly before the wedding, so that when the day comes, it’ll feel like having an extra friend by your side.

Your photographer is the only supplier who’ll be with you for pretty much the whole day, and so it’s imperative that you like and trust them. An engagement shoot is the perfect opportunity for us to just hang out and chat. I love to find out about all about you: how you met, how he or she proposed, your plans for the big day, your favourite film, everything really!

2. You can get use to being in front of the camera…

A lot of people are less than excited at the prospect of having their picture taken. Some are overly conscious about how they look; others just freeze in front of the camera. And I completely empathise! You’d be surprised how many photographers hate being on the other side of the lens.

But it’s my job to help you relax and forget all about that self-consciousness. And believe me, you will! Before you know it, you’ll be laughing and joking with your other half, not even thinking about the camera. Having this test run can help you realise that it’s actually not that scary after all, so on the wedding day you’re much more relaxed.

3. You’ll get to see how the photographer works…

Every photographer is different and will approach photographing a wedding in their own way. My own style is natural and documentary; I sometimes give a little direction, but in general I like to capture moments as they happen naturally, rather than having a lot of posed, formal shots. The engagement shoot is a chance for you to see me at work, so you’ll have more of an idea what to expect on the big day.

Beforehand, I’ll ask you to have a think about a possible location; for example, where you went on your first date, or got engaged; somewhere that has a special meaning for you. Or we could just go your local pub! The shoot itself is very relaxed. We’ll walk around, chat, and I’ll take pictures. Easy!

4. Its’ an excuse to have a professional photoshoot…

Some things call for a proper celebration, and I reckon an engagement is definitely one of them! These days, most of the photos we have of ourselves and our nearest and dearest come from our phone camera, but this is one occasion when you deserve more than a selfie! An engagement shoot is a great excuse to dress up in your favourite outfit (or splash out on a new one!) and have your photo taken by a professional. And a professional photo shoot of course means…

5. You’ll have beautiful, professional photographs… (that you can use for your wedding!)

Another aspect of the digital age is that the majority of our photographs never make it off our computer, tucked away in the deepest corners of our hard drive. It’s so nice to actually print the photograph, whether in a beautiful album, or to frame and hang on your wall. The bonus of an engagement shoot is that you’ll have a bunch of awesome photos to use for your wedding. I’ve seen couples use them for save the date cards, invitations, the guest book, slideshows – the list goes on!

6. It’s Fun!

Planning a wedding is stressful, there’s no doubt about it. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the politics of invitations and seating plans, or to get bogged down in the budget. An engagement shoot is an opportunity for a bit of a breather from all that.

It’s a chance for you to treat yourself and spend a few hours with your best friend, the reason you’re doing all of this. You get to hang out together without the pressure of worrying about the guests or the bridal party, or when dinner is served. And I get to capture all of that, which makes for some very special photographs.
