Why you love this wedding…

Everything about it. Mel and Craig are totally bonkers in a good way and were after throwing a fantastic weekend party for their friends. Styling of the wedding was a dream to photograph and Voewood House as a venue is so eclectic and bizarre and provides so many wonderful backdrops to shoot against.

What were the couple’s requirements…

Capture the day as it happens and document all the fine detail.

Favourite details of the day…

The homemade badges for all the guests. One was even made for me.

Favourite moment of the day…

Photographing Mel and Craig fully clothed in the bath!

How would you describe your wedding theme…

50’s chic with a homemade slice of psychedelia

What was your main hopes and plan for the day…

We really wanted the whole party to feel relaxed and personal for both us and our guests, so we did as many things as possible to make this happen, from the name badges we made, the games on the tables and in the gardens, the caterers, the photographer and the music and dress policy, everything was always focussed on fun and having a good time and not being too regimented.

We both love to dress up and a 50’s theme was just perfect as it allowed people the flexibility to wear a style that suited them, from hawaiian shirts to formal and bikinis to bolero jackets and evening dresses.  And although we had the guiding themes for the daytime and evening, we also stressed that people could turn up in Converse and shorts if that’s what they wanted.

Was your favourite part of the day…

The tiki bar opening… Once we’d reached this stage it meant that all the official jobs were pretty much taken care of, we’d changed into our evening outfits, the band were set up and playing a bunch of surf rock tunes, people were dancing and it was time to really start the party.

What was your budget…

£22000

What was your biggest expense…

The venue was the most extravagant part of the wedding but it’s uniqueness meant that we didn’t need to dress it much at all and it really made the event as special as it was.

How did you save money…

Rather than hiring everything, we scoured second hand shops, Ebay, Preloved and Etsy for vintage items we could use, knowing that we could sell a lot of them on again afterwards to recoup some of the money spent.

We made individual name badges for our guests that featured some of their interests or a reference to something we’ve shared together, we cut up some colourful plastic cards as the badge base, added the guests name with necklace letter beads and items scoured from Ebay and Etsy such as dolls house decorations, mini wine bottles and tiny sports equipment. Everyone loved them and they had the desired effect in encouraging people to interact with one another.

Advice to any couples about to get married…

DELEGATE! Make sure your guests know who your best man and maid of honour are well in advance of the big day, and that everyone has their contact details. There is a lot for the bride and groom to take care of on the lead up to the wedding itself and having guests contact you every couple of days with their issues is probably not the best recipe for a relaxing build up.

What was it like working with your photographer…

It’s invaluable to get the right photographer and making sure that you’re on the same page in terms of style and how much intrusion is acceptable, having found Michael from My Beautiful Bride we knew we found the right man for the job. We didn’t want things to be too posed and his rock and roll heritage suited us down to the ground.

We had considered trying to save the money by asking friends to do it for us but in the end we felt we’d made the right choice as they were left to enjoy themselves and we’ll have these wonderful shots for the rest of our lives!
