Advice For Newly Engaged Couples…

Love is all around…

Christmas and New Year is the time for family and loved ones, and usually brings us a fresh wave of newly engaged couples. If you’re reading this then chances are, you are one of them…if so – BIG congratulations!!

So, what now? It can be easy to lose your head in the clouds (or Pinterest!) so I’ve got some top tips for you if you’re feeling a tad overwhelmed by all the decisions that lie ahead…

Get ready for questions…

‘Have you set a date?’…’Am I invited?’…’How did he propose?’…Friends and family will be excited for you so get ready for your engagement to be the topic of conversation!

If you don’t want to give too much away, or you haven’t made any decisions yet, something like ‘We’re looking at having a Spring wedding’ or ‘We plan to have a long engagement to allow time to work things out’ should stop too much pestering.

At this point, don’t commit to inviting someone or making them part of your wedding party if things may change – trust me, it will save you a headache in the long run!

Guest list & budget…

This is by no means your final guest list, but putting together an initial draft will give you an idea of the size of your wedding – you’ll probably be surprised how many family and friends you have once you start adding them up!

‘Budget’ can seem like a scary word to avoid but it is crucial to figure it out before you plan a single thing, to avoid going way over what you can afford. Having an idea of both of these things will be important when you start looking at venues and contacting vendors.

Think about dates…

If you want to get married during wedding season (May-September) you’ll need to get into venues sooner rather than later to secure your preferred location. Suppliers can also be booked up well in advance, so it may help to do a bit of research into those you’re interested in before setting the final date. Hold off booking things such caterers, photographers and entertainment until a date is finalised with your venue to avoid anyone pulling out.

Consider hiring help…

It’s a common myth that wedding planners are only for celebrities or couples with a grand budget. The cost of hiring a planner or stylist does vary but you should be able to find one to suit your budget. Having an expert to ease the pressure, guide you through the whole process and pull it all together, is a sound investment that will allow you to enjoy this special, exciting time in your life! Embrace the moment…

Don’t rush into planning – take some time to enjoy your engagement! No doubt you’re caught up in a whirlwind of excitement but making quick decisions and putting down deposits may come back to bite you when you actually take the time to think about what you truly want; by then it’s too late to change things without losing money.

Have an engagement shoot…

This follows on from my previous point – enjoy it! I didn’t see the big fuss over engagement shoots…until I had one. Think of it as a warm up, and a great way to test out a potential photographer for your big day. You get to see how the photographer works and whether you feel comfortable around them, with some beautiful photos at the end!
