Why you love this wedding…

I love this wedding because it was extremely creative and colourful and just so much fun! The couple were so creative and their wedding whole heartedly reflected their journey together as a couple and I loved everything about it. From the maps along the walls showing their travel destinations, the quirky yurt village venue, the vintage films cameras on the tables for guests to use, the beautiful election of homemade cakes, the brides gorgeous flower crown, the combinations of styles and traditions coming together “America meets England”.

What were the couple’s requirements…

They loved my style of natural relaxed photography and they wanted me to capture the day as it unfolds, but also focus on the beautiful hand crafted details, the venue and it’s beautiful grounds and their friends and family having a great time.

Favourite details of the day…

There were so many! I love the brides beautiful hand made dress it was just WOW! I have never seen  dress like this! I also loved Laura’s cowboy boots! Another of my favourite details was the copious amounts of colourful bunting that hung from the beautiful tree in the centre of the venues outdoor space. I am not a huge fan of bunting but it really added to the fun festival vibe.

Favourite moment of the day…

The bride and groom portrait session had to be my most favourite part of the day. The couple messed around quite a bit which I loved, they were so relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera. The bride started pushing the groom around in a wheel barrow! It made me chuckle so much! Then we walked off into the woodlands to capture some stunning environmental portraits which are my absolute favourite!

Tell us how you met and got engaged…

We met while we were both living in Russia, teaching English. We spent the summer teaching at a camp for children and spent the next few years travelling together. We got engaged while we were on a road trip in Australia in 2014. We were camping at Wilson’s Promontory National Park surrounded by wombats and dingos. We climbed to the top of Mount Oberon, which has amazing views of the park and the sea. Spencer didn’t have a ring, so on the walk up, he had made one from a twig wrapped up into a ring shape. Spencer was pretty nervous, and did the build up to the proposal, almost forgetting to actually mention the ‘will you marry me?’ part! It was really sweet. We sat at the top of the mountain for a while, then walked down to get some champagne to celebrate, but the small camp shop was teetotal and seemed to only sell fish and chips. So we celebrated with some chips and cans of coke.

What were your main hopes for the day…

We wanted to have a relaxed and fun day, in the outdoors, where people could play games and let their hair down. Good food, lots of games, fun and dancing.

Was your favourite part of the day…

Spencer- ‘When I first saw Laura. She looked beautiful and had a huge smile on her face!’

Laura- ‘Walking down the aisle with my dad, and seeing Spencer waiting for me. Seeing friends and family beaming at us both.’

What was your budget…

Around £13000

How was your day unique…

We had friends fly in from all over the world and family coming together to meet for the first time. It was a really special day, seeing people from different parts of our lives, chatting and having fun together. We made choices for our food, outfits, music, ceremony etc, that fitted our personalities and got rid of the traditions that didn’t fit us as a couple. Laura found a jewellery designer in Paris who makes jewellery inspired by her Serbian heritage. Laura wanted to have something to represent her Serbian grandfather who had passed away that year, and the necklace was perfect. The rose ragrug which we stood on to say our vows, was made by Laura’s nan and grandad when they were newlyweds over 50 years ago. We had some American details such as S’mores boxes for the fire pit, made by Spencer’s mum and grandma. We also had lots of games for people to play including croquet, cricket, sack races and more. One of our highlights was a Bride and Groom sack race with our friends. One of our friends did magic tricks, Laura’s brother drove her in his car and her other brother was in charge of music. Spencer’s brother and Laura’s bridesmaids made sure everything ran smoothly. We really couldn’t have done it without help from family and friends.

What was your biggest expense…

The venue. The venue hire was quite a big cost, but it made for a wonderful weekend!

How did you save money…

We got really, really creative, and every free moment was spent making decorations for the wedding. We got everybody involved, aunties and cousins making pom poms, Laura’s parents helped make a voile curtain for the barn, and it all came together through good old fashioned team work. Family members and friends did the cakes for us, including an amazing yurt cake which was made by Laura’s sister-in-law, Rachel.

We scoured car boot sales and charity shops for items we could put flowers in, use as decorations or include in the ceremony. We made our table runners from an old Atlas which we tea stained and stuck into two long strips.

The flowers were made by a friend who worked extremely hard and they looked beautiful.

Our favours were mason jars which we painted with chalk paint and wrote our guests names onto. This was great because it saved a lot of introductions! We also had a summer wine which Spencer and Laura’s brother had brewed for the year leading up to the wedding. They bottled it into small bottles and printed out cute labels for them all. We also bulk bought lots of seed packets and made little labels for each of those. For the children, Laura drew Wedding day colouring books for them, with yurts and flowers to colour in.

Lots of our guests arrived early the day before to help set the venue up, and that was a really brilliant day, watching all of the people we love helping us prepare for our big day.

We also chose a bbq lunch which cut some costs and had Devon pasties in the evening. We also bought our own wine and champagne and paid corkage which worked out well. Basically, wherever we saw something that we liked, we worked out how we could make it ourselves, on the cheap!

What was it like working with your photographer…

Amazing. Amber is so great. We got all of the photos we wanted and more. She takes all of the photos that you ask for, and then you see what she has taken and there are so many photos that you would never have even thought to ask for. We love looking back through our photos, such happy memories, captured beautifully. Her style is very natural and effortless. She manages to be present at all of the important moments and yet you don’t really know she is there. Amber is so lovely, and so professional. We really couldn’t recommend her highly enough.

Advice to any couples about to get married…

Enjoy it all. It all goes so quickly. The run up to the wedding was almost as much fun as the actual day. Get your loved ones involved, make things together, and have fun! Things will go wrong, accept that before you start and you will have a much more fun day! Book a good photographer, as the day whizzes by, you can be sure that you will have lots of lovely photographs to look back on. Make time in the day where you and your groom can be alone, even if just for 5 minutes, to take it all in.

Congratulations to you both, thank you so much for sharing!
