Introducing Hollyhock Lane…

We Welcome Hollyhock Lane…

Whats not to love about HollyHock Lane stationery! Quirky & alternative, charming and pretty, hand drawn and painted stationery by artist and illustrator Julie Annis.

All the designs Julie creates start their lives on good old-fashioned paper, and she uses pens, paints, inks and collages to make designs that are fun and pretty before translating them into digital formats for modern printing presses. The stationery is then printed by Julie’s printers (who have very green credentials such as using vegetable based inks,) onto lovely thick, vintage finish, recycled card.

Julie’s vision is to design stationery that’s creative and original and that is a bit different from the run of the mill wedding stationery that you’re used to.  Here she tells us a little bit more about her business…

Tell us a bit about Hollyhock Lane Stationery…

Once upon a time I did a fine art painting degree at Edinburgh College of art, and after graduating I started working as a graphic designer and illustrator. I found that I had this slightly weird combination of skills that were never quite, completely satisfied in my day to day work, because I never got to do the really creative work that I craved. It was when I was getting married in 2009 and I created the stationery for our own wedding, that it got me thinking about how unimaginative much of the wedding stationery market was (especially back then). I realised that designing wedding stationery could be the perfect excuse for me to combine my talents and do something really creative by creating stationery that was a bit different from the norm.

Then, in 2012 whilst pregnant, I started sketching out designs for an off the peg wedding stationery collection. Hollyhock Lane was born, but it’s only been in the last 6 months that I’ve been able to fully launch it.

Now up and running, Hollyhock Lane offers two main areas of service. You can either choose one of my  affordable and ready to print designs from the collection, which can be personalised with your details, or you can choose to go fully bespoke and I’ll create a design especially for your wedding that tells your own unique story.

What makes you Unique…

As my background is as an artist and professional graphic designer, unusually for wedding stationery, my designs are all originally hand drawn and painted. I don’t use templates, clip art or reused images. Much of the typography I use is also hand lettered. My designs are like little pieces of artwork and I put a lot of care and thought into each of them. I don’t scrimp on the imagery – each design takes hours and hours of hand crafted work.

I also insist that they are printed by high quality professional printers onto 100% recycled, thick card with a vintage papery, (not glossy) finish.

Tells us what you love about your business…

I absolutely love my business. It’s my dream job. I get to paint and draw and fulfil my creative urges, but also help people invite their loved ones to the happiest day of their lives. I love it when brides and grooms find my designs, and they feel they are exactly what they’ve been looking for, having trawled through lots of options that just didn’t suit them.

People’s reaction to your business…

I get many people saying how different my designs are from the usual wedding stationery that we’ve all grown used to, and a feeling of relief that there is something out there that’s a bit unique and special and captures what their wedding day is about. I particularly love it when couples who go for my bespoke service, say that my design for them has hit the nail on the head in terms of expressing their own unique style and story.

Future plans…

I’m actually going to start designing greetings cards too, as well as other party invitations such as baby showers. I’ve just done two bespoke 30th birthday invitations and loved trying out new styles and ideas. I also have so many ideas for new designs to add to the wedding collection, I’m itching to get started.

A massive thank you to Julie! Here are some other examples of her work…
