Easy-Going Woodland Wedding…

Hi Folks! Today we have a super relaxed, festival-style Wedding to share with you. Joanna & Jonathan prove that you can steer away from every tradition out there and still have an awesome Wedding day…and that’s exactly what we like to see at Mr & Mrs Unique!

Over to the photographer of the hour, Tasha Newland of Ikonworks to tell us a bit more…

Name of the couple: Joanna & Jonathan

Wedding Venue: Wise Wedding Venue, Kent

Why you love this wedding…

Honestly, I loved Jo’s style and approach to the wedding, said simply it was all about them as a couple, celebrating with their family in their way.  On top of this when she told the story of her wedding ring and the approach they made to Glastonbury, the decision to shoot for them was made.  I have always tried to have the attitude with everything that I do, in that if you don’t try you will never know..

What were the couple’s requirements…

Shoot their celebration, capture the special moments, enjoy the day and add something different and special to the arrangements and plans they had already made, with my style of photography.

Favourite details of the day…

So many things! The super stylish Bride and Bridesmaids, the hilarious, lovely and helpful best man, the first look and the walk the Bride and Groom took together down the aisle.

As well as this remarkably how everyone was so happy, relaxed and exited to be there for Jo and Jay, that it made everything so fun and welcoming.  I noticed as a photographer, I pointed my camera towards a guest or a group to take a shot, and there was no cringing, there was no turning a way, or frightened face.  I loved this so much, because I was there to capture as many moments, smiles and memories for the Bride and Groom, and having willing, confident, chilled out guests makes it so so much more rewarding.

Favourite moment of the day…

Definitely the first look, just as they walked down the aisle together hand in hand.  This is the first time as a photographer I photographed this moment, and its something I will cherish for a very very long time.

Tell us how you met & got engaged…

We met aged 12 and were each other’s first kiss but then broke up and hated each other throughout school, we met again after university when we both applied for the same job and we went about setting up a music night together in North Kent. We’ve been together ever since which was 10 years this year and moved to Brighton after attending a gig and realising this was the place for us in the UK. J proposed on our 7th anniversary and three years later we were finally in the right place to organise and have everyone we wanted for our special day.

What were your main hopes and plans for the day…

What was your favourite part of the day…

The ceremony – that feeling when we first saw each other on the day at the back of the clearing, then walking down the aisle together where all our friends and family cheered and welcomed us. Two of our friends married us, our Mums read our favourite passages, our Dads tied a fisherman’s knot together for us which we will keep forever. Another friend helped us make our promises, our niece and nephew were the flower kids, Jonathan’s brothers were the Best Men, Jo’s seven close friends were her bridesmaids and everyone was so relaxed and willing to just go with the flow of the day and party with us. The ceremony started all of that and was not just the favourite part of the day but one of our favourite moments ever!

How was your day unique…

Our day was as unique as we are as every couple’s should be. We had a lot of things which happen at a lot of weddings but the combination of everything that happened in the lead up, on the day and throughout the evening was unique because it was exactly what we had wanted and with the exact people we wanted to do it with. This is something we would tell anyone getting married, our advice would be to have the day which represents you and not do anything just for the sake of tradition. Having YOUR wedding is what is unique.

What was your budget…

Under £15,000

What was your biggest expense…

The food. We wanted a company very local to the venue who used local ingredients but made special and delicious food. Kitchen of Kent is run by a couple who had recently been married so they knew all the ins and outs of choosing food for 125 people. They were calm, organised and accommodated all our dietary and logistical requirements as well as exquisite food and precision management so we didn’t have to worry about a thing.

How did you save money…

Being sustainable. We made all our own decorations, wedding favours and flowers from things we owned which really saved a lot. We also used charity shops for umbrellas, blankets, lights and parts of our outfits which saved money and kept everything responsibly sourced.

What was is like working with your photographer…

We were lucky enough to win a competition for a photographer, Tasha at Ikonworks. We are so glad we had a professional photographer for the whole day. We couldn’t be happier with how our photos have turned out, Tasha did everything we asked for and so much more, capturing special moments and providing us with memories we will love for ever. We were also so happy that Tasha immersed herself in the vibe and relaxed feeling of the day, she was professional but so friendly and willing to go with our festival whims and every one of our guests has commented on how awesome she was. Budget constrictions meant that without winning a competition we weren’t sure we would be able to afford a professional photographer. In hindsight, it would be awful to miss out on these fantastic images of us, our guests, our day and all the love.

Advice to any couples about to get married…

It’s a common thing to read on wedding blogs but for some reason we still managed to create pressure out of thin air when we should have just let ourselves be excited about the day. This dissipated the minute everyone cheered as we walked down the aisle and made us realise the most important part of the day is the people.

Our advice to anyone getting married is simple – stay calm, choose the simple things which are important to you and remember that everyone present is someone that you love and if they love you, they will love your day!

Congratulations and thanks for sharing! To check out more of Tasha’s work, head to her website here.
