Extraordinary Wedding Cakes…

Today we’re looking back on some extraordinary cakes that have previously featured on the blog. We have some awesome and extremely talented bakers in our directory that constantly push the boundaries to create, not only cakes, but works of art!

From intricate paint work and rainbow colours, to gourmet buttercream and giant skulls…whatever you’re looking for, we’ve got it covered! Enjoy!…

Day of the dead/Mexican inspired cake…

First up is this beauty from MMU’s very own Day of the dead/Mexican photoshoot. This is one of Natasha from Nevie-Pie Cake’s creations, and as always, she did a spectacular job!

She told us about the ideas she had for this cake…

I wanted to create a cake that referenced the Mexican Day of The Dead without going down the floral skull route. I love the bright colours and paper flowers, so I definitely wanted to use paper flowers. I researched some traditional patterns which I painted onto the tiers.

Bright, retro, gourmet buttercream cakes…

Up next are these stand out buttercream cakes from Debbie at Minkiemoo Bakery, who is also one of our amazing suppliers. These bold, quirky cakes have a fab retro twist…and look absolutely delicious!

Here Debbie tells us about her inspiration for their cakes…

Being brought up in a south coast seaside town, we love bold colours and usually take inspiration from vintage, or retro colours/ fabrics/ dresses/ interiors etc. and turn that inspiration into something a little bit different for the modern day bride to be. And being such foodies, it is absolutely essential to us that not only do our cakes look the part, but they taste utterly fabulous too!

Earth and Crystal inspired cake…

Here is another stunning creation by Nevie-Pie Cakes, created for the SNAP Photography Festival. Mr & Mr Unique were asked to come up with a concept for a styled area at the festival, so this ‘Earth’ theme was born, using inspiration from land formations, crystals and rocks.

Natasha tells us about how she came up with the design for this awesome cake…

The inspiration for this cake was earth and gems; I wanted to create a richly coloured cake with sugar crystals and real gold leaf. To complement the gem theme I decide to go for square tiers, it also helps to create a more contemporary silhouette.

‘Larger than life’ 3D masterpieces…

We are huge fans of the Tattooed Bakers here at Mr & Mrs Unique, and it’s not hard to see why! Eddie & Rich are a perfect example of bakers who are willing to take on any challenge, no matter how big or small, to give you the real WOW factor. We even had the pleasure of asking them to create a one of a kind cake for one of our recent shoots at Aynhoe Park!

Here they tell us a bit about the brains behind their amazing masterpieces…

We try and push the boundaries when it comes to our cakes in terms of both scale and subject matter. We feel that cake art and large scale cake sculpture is huge in America but there is no one in the UK who has put their stamp on it – until now!

We’re pretty fearless and don’t feel restricted by cake as a medium – we love a challenge so the more elaborate and unique the design the better!

Awe-inspiring cakes_0010 Baroque bridal shoot cake…

Another MMU shoot and another Nevie-Pie cakes – We just can’t get enough! The baroque style for this shoot was softened slightly by bringing in soft pinks and gold for more of a Bridal feel.

Over to Natasha for some more info on this spectacular cake…

For this cake I wanted to create a sumptuous over the top cake. I created a frame from sugar paste which I gilded and then painted traditional chintzy flowers. I wanted to get away from the tiers being too traditional so I mixed them up a little.

Fabulously floral and feminine cake…

This multi-tiered cake was created by SWT Creation for our Floral Staircase shoot at Aynhoe Park in July. It fits in beautifully with the feminine, romantic, ‘Cinderella’ feel we were going for. The stunning sugar craft flowers breaks up the traditional-ness of the cake to make it more quirky and of course, unique!

Showers and sunshine cake…

Okay, ANOTHER Nevie-Pie cake! We clearly have a soft spot for Natasha’s creations, but with such a wide variation of talents and designs, how could we not!?

This cake was made for a shoot MMU did for Lodge Farm BnB. Here Natasha tells us a bit more behind the inspiration for it…

This cake is inspired by the James Taylor song ‘Shower The People You Love With Love’. It is one of my all-time favourite songs. I trained as an illustrator so I wanted to create a cake that showed off these skills. I love the combination of grey and yellow and felt that this would complement the theme of showers and sunshine. Of course for a wedding cake the ‘rain’ is made up of hearts.

All this cake action has got me all hungry! What a talented bunch they are! To see more of our cake suppliers click here
