Knots & Kisses…
Today we get to share with you the epic engagement shoot of a Mr & Mrs Unique supplier; Nikki from Knots & Kisses. Having got engaged to Ant at Christmas and deciding that she wanted Clare Kinchin to take her wedding photos, they decided to do an engagement session with her so they could feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
The location for the shoot was Dartmoor, just check out those amazing clouds! Really add the drama to the photos! Over to the lovely Nikki to tell us more about it…
Nikki & Ant…
Tell us how you met and got engaged…
We met at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2006. I’d just got back from travelling and my friend had bought us tickets as we regularly went every year. It was Ant’s first ever festival and him and his friend found themselves stood behind us on the Friday night before Placebo came on. They introduced themselves and that was it … me and Ant spent the entire weekend just talking non stop – staying up all night chatting whilst the others were asleep in the tent.
Our first 6 months were spent with me temporarily living at my Mums in Birmingham and Ant visiting me from Essex before I eventually moved back to London … and we’ve been together now for the last 10 years.
We got engaged at Christmas whilst we were on holiday in Morocco. We were on a group tour through the Atlas and were going camel trekking in the Sahara when Ant got down on one knee half way up a sand dune next to our rather grumpy camel to propose!
What ideas do you have for your wedding?
Too many! Having worked in the wedding industry now for the last 6 years my head is full of ideas and Pinterest boards! Actually though pinning down a theme for our day was pretty easy … when we got back from Morocco I suggested a colour scheme of Navy, Dark Pink & Blush with dark green ferns. We both love dark colours and I love florals so it just seemed a natural progression – it’s very much based on how we are currently decorating our house, with lots of navy walls and dark vintage and antique furniture.
We also have added in a ‘steers skull’ motif which I created for our Save the Date cards and that is becoming a bit of a running theme as well.
What’s important to you the most when planning your big day?
Our main aim, other than getting hitched, is to plan a really lovely relaxed day where we can celebrate with just a small number of family and friends who are special to us.
That’s what we have to keep reminding ourselves when another idea pops up on Pinterest or a blog … does it create that relaxed feeling we are after or is it just a bit too fussy and too much.
What are you most looking forward to?
Other than getting married … seeing all the hopefully happy faces of our friends and family all together.
How do you plan to make your day unique to you?
Gosh loads of different ways! We are very much keeping our personalities in mind when planning. I love pretty sparkly things and bucket loads of flowers but as I said we also really like things which are dark and moody when it comes to interiors and we are both total geeks when it comes to movies and literature, so we want to incorporate lots of fun stuff like this as well.
I’ve already started this with the design for the Save the Dates – they looked quite classy and elegant with a floral motif but then I added tiny Stormtrooper helmets in with the florals on the envelope liner and a reference to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in the text … many of the guests didn’t get it but it was perfect for us!
What was it like working with your photographer, why did you decide to do an engagement shoot?
So much fun! I have known Clare for a while now through the wedding industry and she was the very talented person who took all the images of my stationery designs for my website, so I just knew that we were going to get on. Ant had only met Clare once at a wedding fair though, and we are both pretty nervous in front of the camera usually, so I felt that an engagement shoot was important in order to feel totally comfortable with Clare on the day.
We decided to go up to Haytor on Dartmoor as we just love the moody dramatic vistas and, although I was disappointed in the weather when we first got up, the amazing clouds in the sky provided the perfect backdrop for the look we were going for! I threw a few vintage suitcases and blankets in the car and Clare, after seeing our Save the Date design, brought along the skulls and it just worked out perfectly … we had so much fun!
