Pimping up your wedding in style…
When Vowed & Amazed recently joined our network of amazing UK wedding suppliers, to say I was a little bit happy would be a HUGE understatement!! Big, bold, colourful, hand crafted, unique… their collection of props to hire for weddings and events is huge!!
From colourful light up letters to light up moons, enormous prop trees to sequin wall backdrops, they have it all! Today we say holla to the team and find out more about the people behind the brand…
Vowed & Amazed…
First Day of School introduction of yourself…
Hello! We are Caroline & Stuart the designer and fabricator behind Vowed & Amazed, also secretly husband and wife. We moved from East London to the countryside with 1 mad cat and 1 ridiculously beautiful Son. We design/build original oversize props and décor for weddings and events.
Tell us what are your favourite things?
Our work is our hobby. Serious nerds. We LOVE designing and building in our workshops and hunting for vintage pieces to renovate. Our warehouse is full of half started projects. Arcade machines, bumper cars, old bits of funfairs… and we love spending time there, we just wish it was a bit tidier. But messiness is the curse of the creative (or so we say!).
Tell us a bit about your HQ…
A magical mess. We are lucky enough to have a large workshop and warehouse to house of huge collection of props, décor and random things. There is never a dull moment as we are always working on something. We moved out of East London where we were basically working in a tiny shed so this is a dream for us.
What made you start up the business?
We already worked in the industry; Stuart for companies that manufactured scenery and me (Caroline) as a promoter/event designer for burlesque and club events. When it came to our own wedding in 2011 we joined forces and Vowed & Amazed was born. I knew as we designed the pieces for our wedding that I could use the images to launch or next venture, but honestly I thought it would be a nice little side project. Boy was I wrong! I honestly didn’t know if anyone else out there would be into giant letters at their weddings but WOW look at that industry now!
What do you love most about your job?
That we’d be doing it anyway. That we were doing it anyway. The fact that we make money from it is the icing on the cake. Seeing people photos after their events is so joyous as well, the hire is temporary, but I love that the images from those hires are with the couples forever.
What makes you unique?
Our designs. I like to think our East London sensibilities combined with our formal training gives us an understanding of what it takes not to cross that fine line into tacky. Our use of light, and how that affects atmosphere. A fine balance between making something stylish yet practical. There is a balance between what you see visually with your own eyes and what a photograph or videographer needs for a great image.
Who is your ideal customer?
Colourful eclectic couples who aren’t afraid to show their personality! Someone who gets it! Someone who gets us! Anyone who slightly over uses glitter and likes a good dancing photo!
What advice do you give to make sure people book the right suppliers for their day?
Book as far in advance as you can to avoid disappointment.
Give your supplier as much info. as you can, don’t say “I’ll be there on the day to tell you” as you’ll be far to busy on the day and with good reason!
When booking suppliers go for the best you can (within reason) afford. I always think of the quote “There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper”
What inspires you?
Visiting amazing architecture, steam funfairs, all funfairs, signage, odd little local museums, bright lights of the city, old cars, famous old hotels, cake, cocktails… after a few cakes and cocktails pretty much everything inspires us
Projects you are most proud of or your proudest moment?
We designed and built our giant disco full moon which ended up in the window of Sotherby’s that was great. Our props have been on the front cover of NME and other magazines. We’ve had our pieces on Strictly which is always fun. We’ve worked with Marc Almond, Kylie Minogue, Take That, Dawn Porter and Chris O’Dowd to name a few but our proudest times are probably when we are working on a new piece and 10 prototypes down the line we finally crack it! I think our ‘Til Death sign is a sight to behold, it is so special to us, as we developed it from a small hand painted sign we had at our own wedding. It took lots of designing and testing, so I am very proud of that.
What’s your top on the day wedding advice?
Do your best and be yourself, don’t look back a regret playing it safe! But at the same time don’t sweat the small stuff, it REALLY won’t matter on the big day
What makes a great wedding?
Honestly I should say the décor! But really it is your loved ones around you with plenty of food and booze! TRUTH.
Any new services, ideas or future plans?
Oh lots! We’ve just launched our new website, we’ve got the online shop launching soon (we always had one but we’ve designed a new ‘to buy’ product which we love).
We have a sister company www.thecuriouscollection.co.uk which we are always trying to find time to add to.
And we have a backlog of designs to build that will keep us busy for a good while.
