Tilly & Anthony…

Tell us how you met and got engaged…

We met through a friend when we were 15(Tilly) and 16(Anthony) and started dating, and have never stopped! We’ve now been together for ten years! Anthony proposed randomly one night, we had slightly discussed marriage before and had told him that I never wanted a big showy proposal, so instead he set up tea and cake outside on our flat roof with fake grass and fairy lights wrapped around our washing line!

What was your main hopes and plan for the day…

To be married by the end of it! And to create a day that celebrated our relationship with the people we cared about the most. We didn’t really plan that much, only to be at the venues at the right times, everything else just seem to fall into place when it needed to.

Was your favourite part of the day…

It’s so cliche, but the whole day was so much fun it’s hard to choose just one moment that was our favourite. One highlight that stands out would be venturing off to take some of the couple shots, we were able to sweet talk our way into a christmas tree maze that was being built for the winter pleasure gardens. We were aware that The Tea House was situated right next to Vauxhall city farm, so of course we had to visit in our wedding attire and get some photos with the alpaca’s!

How was your day unique…

Instead of spending a lot of money transporting our guests in cabs or hiring a bus to get from the ceremony to the reception venue, we decided we would use the trusty Victoria line. Taking the tube in theory it was a simple plan, but Tilly jumped on the tube with alot of our guests thinking Anthony had already gotten on, but discovered quite soon that she had already lost her husband so quickly! They jumped off at the next station to be reunited with Anthony and some of his family when the next tube pulled into the station!

What was your budget…

We budgeted £12,000, but came in just under that at £10,500

What was your biggest expense…

There was two things that we were happy to spend money on. Firstly the rings, we were walking around a wedding fair when we discovered ‘Coo’, we hadn’t even booked anything at that point and only went to the wedding fair to start our planning process. The rings did come under what we had budgeted for, so that was a bonus to have the money to spend somewhere else and amazingly beautiful rings!

Secondly, the photographer, we wanted to have amazing photos as these are the things that are going to last and remind you of the day. it was so important that we got a photographer that would capture beautiful photos of our friends and family and of moments that we might not have seen. After looking around on blogs for a while we found one photographer whose work we consistently loved, that being the talented Ellie Gillard! We were not disappointed, she was like a ninja, we barely noticed the she was there! When we went off for shots on our own with her she made us feel relaxed and found some really interesting locations, who knew Vauxhall could be so pretty!

How did you save money…

We only used two cabs throughout the day as no one was going to see Tilly arrive or see us depart at the end of the night. We loved the idea of using public transport as everyone has an oyster card and it’s not something that you usually do when attending a wedding!

I definitely save so much money on the dress by making it my self. For something that is only going to be worn for one day and to have the skills to make the dress myself, it seemed silly not to, especially as I couldn’t find one I like in the bridal shops.

We of course saved money on all of the things that we DIY’ed; We wanted the reception meal tables to be colourful and interesting, so we found some fabric online and made napkins out of them, we also used some of the confetti that we had made for the ceremony to scatter on the tables and for the name places we already owned some quirky animal stamps so used these on luggage tags we bought from Ebay! We also created the table plan ourselves as we knew that it would be easier and we would able to make it tie in with the rest of the bits we’d created.

Together we created the invites, Tilly made her dress from scratch and made Anthony an embroidered pocket square that he received on the morning of our wedding. We decided to create our own cake toppers, it took us a while to decide on what we wanted. Animals seem to feature on things like the name place settings and napkins, so we decided to use awesome animals pimped up in wedding attire for our cake toppers. There were a few other little bits and pieces that we made or customized for the day.

They were all so much more personal by spending the time doing them together in the run up to the wedding. We kind of miss it now!

What was it like working with your photographer…

Ellie was fantastic, from the first meeting we felt comfortable and trusted her completely to capture our day beautifully! At times we forgot that she was there, which meant that we could relax completely and she was able to take so many natural pictures. We liked that Ellie didn’t really do the typical staged/posed photos, and allowed us to be our awkward selves. We have recommended her and would absolutely recommend her to any engaged couple looking for an amazing photographer!

Advice to any couples about to get married…

You don’t have to do things that you don’t want to, like cars, cake and favours, it’s your money that you are spending. Make sure you have a wedding that is for you, if you don’t see aspects being worth while then don’t do it to please other people, or because it’s what is expected at a wedding. It is only one day, it better to have a beautiful, wonderful marriage that lasts a lifetime than a wedding that lasts just one day!
