Resh & Ed’s Art Deco meets India wedding…

 A 1920’s Agatha Christie Inspired Wedding…

I’m super happy to share with you this gorgeous art deco / indian inspired wedding of Resh & Ed. They both decided one night to get married after watching an episode of ITV’s Poirot, where they both fell in love with the hotel featured on it- The Burgh Island Hotel. Not really surprising as the hotel is an iconic Devon landmark, moored on its own tidal island, surrounded by golden beaches and beautiful seas.

After locating the hotels website they decided right there and then that they had to book it for their wedding day- How about that for spontaneity! Here we find out more about their big day…

Thanks to Catherine from Lily & Frank Photography for sharing these images with us.

Why you love this wedding…

Resh & Ed are two of the most lovely and genuine couples you could hope to meet, I loved how sweet they were together and how they took the 1920s theme and made it their own. Burgh Island is a stunning venue and their attention to detail was a delight to photograph they really made the most of the special location whilst also keeping things fun and relaxed. It was a real pleasure to be a part of their day.

What were the couple’s requirements…

To capture the story of their day in images, making the most out the incredible venue and location whilst keeping things very relaxed, unobtrusive and allowing them to be themselves.

Favourite details of the day…

All the 1920s details, I loved Resh’s headpiece and the incredible cake!

Favourite moment of the day…

Oh too many… I love time with the couple when we get to create our couple portraits and the location was beautiful and the helipad image is possible my favourite from the day but Ed’s brother was the best man and he made a great speech – lots of laughter and emotion for me to capture.

Tell us how you met and got engaged…

We sat opposite one another at work on either side of a desk divider. One day we just started chatting about films we loved over the top of the divider and haven’t stopped chatting since! Seven years later, we were watching an episode of ITV’s Poirot which was filmed at Burgh Island. We loved atmosphere of the Hotel so we searched for their website and found that you could get married there. We decided then and there that was where we wanted to get married so we booked it. Ed officially proposed on the cliff edge of Burgh Island, the day we went to visit to meet Anne, the wedding manager.

How would you describe your wedding theme…

What was your main hopes and plan for the day…

We wanted all our guests to have as much fun as possible at all times and we aimed for quirky rather than tradition. For instance, we named the tables after Agatha Christie novels: Evil under the Sun, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile etc.

Was your favourite part of the day…

It’s really difficult to decide as we have so many wonderful memories of the day. Ed’s favourite part was when the sun suddenly came out after the morning drizzle and everyone decamped outside to have champagne and nibbles on the terrace overlooking the Mermaid Pool. My favourite moment was probably of when we were announced to the room as Mr & Mrs Jones on entering the dining room for the Wedding Breakfast.

How was your day unique…

We combined elements of Indian culture with the Art Deco features of the Hotel in the planning for the day. For the wedding, my bridesmaids and I wore sarees and all our female relatives on both sides of the family wore sarees too.

Our wedding cake, by Choccywoccydoodah, had an Indian holy cow on top and a large peacock woven around the layers. Then we all changed into 1930s style outfits for reception which was perfect for the dancing the night away whilst the jazz band played.

All our guests stayed with us at the hotel so it felt like the party didn’t really stop. Everyone was there for the most amazing breakfast the day after, some of our guests even went surfing. Even though it was nearly November, the weather was amazingly warm so we went down the beach to paddle in sea.

What was your budget…

£24,000

What was your biggest expense…

The venue, which covered pretty much everything – food, accommodation for all our guests, the flowers. Our second biggest expense was our honeymoon to Venice on the Orient Express.

How did you save money…

We made a lot of stuff ourselves such as the wedding invites which we designed ourselves, the table centerpieces, the guest book and the wedding favours.

What was it like working with your photographer…

It was really easy working with Catherine, very relaxing. We’d seen her work on a wedding blog and knew that her style was exactly what we were looking for. From talking with her before the wedding we knew her work was going to be perfect. Catherine really knew how to get the best shots from us and our guests whilst being unimposing.

Advice to any couples about to get married…

Having the guest list sorted as soon as possible makes the rest of planning fall into place. Also having a venue that does everything makes life so much easier!

Thank you both so much rest & Ed for sharing your wedding day with us and to Catherine from Lily & Frank for the photos.
