We love a good cake here at MMU so today we’re talking about some unique and alternative wedding cake ideas.

Long gone are the days of traditional, tiered fruitcakes, where the cake was simply there to be cut and eaten. Cakes have now become a primary element of wedding themes, with couples opting for brighter colours, amazing flavour combinations, personalised cake toppers, sweets, and real flowers. With this in mind we wanted to show you some inspirational cakes that have been featured on some of the weddings we’ve shared… Enjoy!

Why not ditch the singular wedding cake altogether and go for a tower of macaroons, cupcakes, doughnuts, brownies, mini desserts…the options are endless! A dessert tower also serves as a great ‘grab and go’ opportunity to keep everyone topped up for a night of partying!

For Bride’s who are on a tight budget and can’t splash out on an extravagant cake, a dessert table is a fab idea. Ask guests to bring along a homemade dessert or cake each and display them all on a large table. Stick some tiny flags in the top detailing what they are and you’re done! This will save you a tonne of money, give your guests a large variety and add a wonderful personal touch to your day.

Day of the dead/Mexican inspired cake…

First up is this beauty from MMU’s very own Day of the dead/Mexican photoshoot. This is one of Natasha from Nevie-Pie Cake’s creations, and as always, she did a spectacular job!

She told us about the ideas she had for this cake…

I wanted to create a cake that referenced the Mexican Day of The Dead without going down the floral skull route. I love the bright colours and paper flowers, so I definitely wanted to use paper flowers. I researched some traditional patterns which I painted onto the tiers.
