Creative, Urban Wedding Flowers by Shilpa Reddy…
Today we say hello to the lovely Shilpa Reddy; a London based florist who loves creating beautiful flower designs for urban, creative weddings…
First Day of School introduction of yourself…
Hello, I’m Shilpa and believe it or not, I started my working life as a doctor! However I was unable to deny my creative side for long, so made the life-changing decision to start my own business and have never looked back!
Thankfully my ability to wield sharp instruments appears not to have gone to waste since now I love snipping flowers and creating bespoke designs for my lovely couples.
The one thing I love more than flowers is people and am always fascinated by our couples’ stories so would love to hear yours.
I am also strong believer in promoting diversity and love how London is a melting pot for so many cultures… something I definitely try to reflect in our designs.
Tell us what you love?
Live jazz. Characterful spaces. Open fires. Long summer nights with friends. Boutique hotels. Clever cocktails. Black cabs. Bright lights and big cities.
Tell us a bit about your HQ…
I crave variety when I’m working so I have a couple of go-to workspaces for design and admin tasks. I love decadent spaces that resemble the gentleman’s clubs of old… Century Club in London is one of my favourite spaces for client meetings.
My flowers however don’t get any such luxury, they’re kept in a warehouse in as close to Antarctic temperatures as possible. I’d definitely recommend donning a duffle coat before entering.
What made you start up the business?
A desire to create for a living, to feel free from the 9-5 and the challenge of building something from scratch… yep I’m a glutton for punishment!
I love how diverse weddings can be and how they celebrate love in all forms; Definitely an industry that I love being part of.
What do you love most about your job?
Hard to choose! I love meeting people and hearing their stories; I love designing but I think most of all I love the sense of freedom that being an entrepreneur gives you.
What makes you unique?
My crazy career change from doctor to floral designer!
Also I’ve always loved story telling, so I like to think I create landscapes that our couples can use to tell their story to the world.
I try to create a sense of warmth and luxury for the people I meet… it’s really important for me to make others feel special.
Who is your ideal customer?
Creative, fashion-forward, urban couples that want to marry in beautiful, non-traditional venues.
Recently we’ve designed for private members clubs, boutique hotels, warehouses and museums.
What advice do you give to make sure people book the right suppliers for their day?
If you can, meet your suppliers in person or at very least book a Skype or phone call. Trust your gut instinct, and stick to your guns. It can seem an immense task trying to work out which suppliers you need to book so if you have a supplier that you like, then ask them for recommendations of people that they’re happy to work with. Coordination between suppliers is key, which is why we have a list of creative and high quality suppliers that we give to our couples when they book with us.
What inspires you?
The writings of Maya Angelou are beautiful.
Your proudest moment?
Handing in my notice at work and starting up my own company (against the advice of practically everyone) is a real stand out moment for me. I often think back to it and smile. The first wedding I did comes a close second.
What’s your top on the day wedding advice?
It may seem a strange thing to say but brides, remember to pack some flats! By the end of the evening those tootsies will needing some TLC.
What makes a great wedding?
Love! (And the flowers of course!) I am a sucker for a good love story so it’s important for me to get to know my couples and their personal journey.
Any new services, ideas or future plans?
Where do I start!
This year we started offering complimentary trips to London’s flower market so our couples can meet their flowers in person. It’s a wonderful day out and the feedback from our couples is that it’s a great source of inspiration. It’s an early morning so we usually stop for a spot of breakfast too!
We already offer bespoke flower workshops in London for private parties but we’re releasing some new Christmas dates soon that would perfect for hen parties and those having a creative weddings. There’ll be lots of Christmas tunes, festive drinks and lovely venues so do keep an eye out.
We offer a social media creator service. Our designs all feature our unique style but we understand that our couples often find their inspiration on Pinterest or instagram, so we encourage couples to send us images which we can then use to work out a moodboard and design.
We re-use as many of our wedding flowers as possible by gifting them to local charities and hospices and we have just signed up as a supplier for the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation because social responsibility is important to us.
We’re always innovating and looking for ways to help our couples feel special so watch this space for more!
